The Garage
Wing Chun school run by Benjamin Edh, affiliated with Nino Bernardo in the town of Västerås, Sweden. The school opened to the public in fall 2008. For those who are in for it we can offer the complete wing chun system as it was taught to Benjamin from Nino Bernardo - (Wong Shun Leung - Ip Man).

Wing chun
A concept based martial art originating from southern China, reknown for its simple and direct techniques. The system can be developed as scientific study in combat, allthough learning wing chun also provides many other benefits, as learning to improvise under pressure and anger management. The system is an excellent way of getting into shape, letting off steam and gaining in confidence. Another great benefit is the development of a deeper understanding of the human body. This is due to the system´s use of bodily mechanics rather than athletic abilities to generate power, balance and stability. Even professional sportsmen and martial artists from other disciplines occasionally study wing chun as a means to enhance their performance in their own areas. The focus on studying wing chun at the garage is to study the system as it is, "just for the hell of it!"

Benjamin Edh

Started learning wing chun in 1991 at what would become the swedish "branch" of Ninos the Basement. At that time a small group of friends was formed to study wing chun under the tutelage of Nino Bernardo. His first seminar in Sweden left an unforgettable impression in those who were there. Nino arrived with one of his senior students, Segun Johnson, and presented his vision and his ideas on wing chuns concepts and practice. It proved to be a vision based on simplicity and functionality without illusions or romantizations regarding his relation to wing chun in particular and martial arts in general. Above this I´d like to mention the relaxed and very fun way of passing his teachings. Left to say that this was a crucial moment for the the further development and research of the art. Since that day Benjamin has been researching and developing his wing chun with the help of Nino and other students affiliated with him. Benjamin is continously attending Ninos seminars, mainly in London and Ibiza to further deepen his understanding of wing chun and to exchange ideas and experiences with those who are on the same road.

Nino Bernardo
Nino

Nino Bernardo, a musician and actor by trade, was one of a handful of students to learn the whole system of Wing Chun from legendary martial artist Wong Shun Leung in Hong Kong in the 1970s. In 1984, Nino set up an infamous word-of-mouth kung fu school in London called the Basement, where he developed a reputation as one of Europe's most skillful and influential Wing Chun teachers. He was also Wong Shun Leung's senior UK representative until the untimely death of his teacher in 1997. Nino has lived in Ibiza since 2000, where he has set up Europe's first alternative kung fu school. His emphasis in recent years has been on the importance of learning Wing Chun for health and personal development. Nino´s homepage

Momo and Benji playing push and pull

The classes are conducted in an informal, relaxed but yet focused way. Everybody, regardless of previous experience, and in accordance with Nino Bernardo and Wong Shun Leungs opinion, works together. It is expected by the student to assume responsability for his own progress. Naturally, as a teacher, I am there to pass information, to support and motivate the student for further development, although the students themselves have to digest, convert and develop the knowledge by their own effort. There is no formal or special garment requested for joining the class. You wear what you are comfortable with. I do recommend a pair of comfortable shoes though. The school is open Wednesdays 5.00pm - 7.00pm, and, 6.00pm - 8.00pm Mondays and Thursdays. The training fee is expected to be paid before the initiation of your intended period; by month, half year or year. Our address will be provided upon your request. You are wellcome to ask any questions via mail or telephone.
